It was mid winter, I remember quiet clearly, horses were being moved from one stall to another. Horses that were turned loose in the fields were having blankets put on. Yes, it was just another day in our large city. Children were sledding down hills and having snowball fights, the snow was quiet thick this year. Of course it seemed like a normal day to me and my horsey friends. I was standing at the edge of my stall, with my head stuck out, waiting for my owner, Vanessa, to bring me a treat. She always came to see me around this time, I waited patiently.
Finally, the young woman showed up. She brought me two apples today instead of one, it was Christmas. I knew this because she was telling me about all the presents she got. She had a new saddle, and she declared that she was going to take me for a spin later on that day.
I was quiet excited.
I was one of the older horses at our stable, being 18 and all. My girl always talked about how I was the prettiest and sweetest horse she had ever met. Sooner or later, she had me convinced that I was. Things were quiet stiff that day, after Vanessa left, I waited and waited for her to come back. A couple of my friends were tied out in the hallway, tacked up and ready to go. It was funny, after their owners tacked them up, they left, and never came back. Neither did my love, Vanessa. Seconds went by, seconds turned to minutes, minutes turned to hours, they never came back. It was right late in the evening and we were all waiting for our feeding.
I stayed at the edge of my stall, watching for someone, or something to walk through those doors and feed us. The horses out in the hallway were still alone, and were quiet antsy. I shrugged it off at first, giving a snort and walking to the back of my stall. I thought, "They'll feed us tomorrow, i'm sure something came up." I slept pretty soundly that night. But I woke up puzzled. The doors had been left open, overnight and horses were still standing in the hallways, restless. I moved quickly to the front of my stall, snow was starting to pile up inside the stable. Of course, being the loyal horse that I was, I stood there and waited for Vanessa.
She never showed up.
And neither did any of the other horse owners.
Those days stranded in the stable grew longer and longer, every now and then I would hear the sound of a coyote howling as they moved closer to our stable. There was no electricity in our barn and horses were dropping weight fast.
The humans vanished into thin air.
I still waited and waited, but was starting to be drove mad by the lack of light and horses fighting each other from other sides of the stall. Some horses tried to get themselves free, some did, but didn't make it far. All I have to say, is that it was a long winter and we was lucky that snow and frost melted in our stalls, leaving us some water. I didn't realize how many horses had died untill spring rolled around, the smell would kill you, and the sound of screaming horses would send you over the edge. Most of the time, I stood at the back of my stall, untill one day, I was sent over the edge.
I kicked and kicked my stall door, untill I could no more, it wore me out easily. Two or three kicks would send me wheezing and guzzling for air. Finally, I just ramed into the door with my chest. I screamed and squealed for that next couple of days. It's funny because I don't remember how I got out of the stall, but I did. And when I finally made it out of that stable, I came to a place of ruins. There were some dead animals and some humans lying around, but I never came to find out how they died. Apparently not all of the humans were dead, because I never found my lovely Vanessa.
Those next few days were lonely as I scowered fields and forests for food, I found some, but not mouch. I did find a creek one day though and as I walked towards it, I heard something from behind me. I turned around and faced a couple of wild horses, their skin was stretched tightly over their bones, their manes were in knots, and there eyes were wide with madness.
That was when I realized that I was going to have to fight, we were all being drove mad. There was no food and there was no hope. But, I had to puff my chest out and fight.
